January 21/05
- The St. John’s Pirates will wear new home and away jerseys
starting in the 2005/06 season. Last season, the Pirates wore what has come to be known as their temporary silver, red and
yellow uniform style.
The home and away jerseys, feature the Pirates sword/P logo created by
Syphicreations with the new sword patch and the third logo as shoulder patches respectively.
The third jersey features the stylized P logo with the Pirates main logo
as a shoulder patch.
To go along with this identity change, the club has also altered its colors
slightly. The team will be using somewhat darker blue and burgundy as its main colors, moving away from the silver,
red and yellow of the past.
September 4/04 - The St. John's Pirates are sad to see 3 of its players turn to Europe to finish
off their hockey careers. Tommy Salo has decided to return to Sweden and to play for Modo of the Swedish Elite League. Sami
Kapanen has also decided to shift to his homeland and return to Finland. The club also had to announce that the deal between
Jonas Hoglund and the Pirates were Hoglund was to finish last season in Europe then comeback to the Pirates will not happen
as he wishes to remain in Europe. The Pirates would like to wish these 3 players the best of luck in all their endevours.
March 17/04 - The goal coming into this season was to get things started. Instead, it turned
out to be a frustrating campaign for the Pirates that were one of 4 teams who did not qualify for post season play.
Marc Crawford did a good job implementing his defensive philosophy. For the most part, the team competed hard on
the defensive end every game. The only missing part was a touch of zoneplay that strategically may have helped in certain
situations. But, there is no questioning the statistics and the improvement made from a few months ago.
I think there
were some definite positives, said Crawford addressing the media on Thursday afternoon. We won games and played
well defensively.
Defence is a good place to start as it will give you a chance to win games but its the other end of the ice that
was problematic this season for St. John's. Offensively, the focus on a zone game, with solid execution, did not happen
consistently. Combine this with the absence of easy shots and fast-break opportunities, and the Pirates were near
the bottom of the GCFHL 2 in far too many offensive categories.
The Pirates need to find a way to make
it easier for their best players to score. That comes by way of refining the offensive system and an improved roster. The
offensive system doesnt need to be overhauled, just loosened up a bit at the right times.
Crawford acknowledged
from the start of the season that the offence would be run through some key players and still feels that is the best option.
Freddy and Chris can obviously be the guys that lead the team, stated Crawford. Their ability is such
that they can put up numbers and make great plays and big shots so surrounded by enough players, Fredrik can easily lead
a team.
But the lack of depth in a structured system hurt St. John's and left a heavy load on Modin
to carry the offensive burden. Crawford is a believer in playoff style hockey where there are low turnovers with a skate
it up, half-ice style of hockey.
So the rebuilding process, with or without Marc Crawford on the bench, has to start
with a master plan of how the team will play. The first thing the Pierre Lacroix has to do, is establish a philosophy
regarding style of play, and build the roster accordingly.
Evaluate the present assets to see if any players are capable
of fitting in and if they dont, then let the trading begin.
The GM needs to walk into his interview with all this
in place as well as a list of knowledgeable people -- hockey people -- who have an extended set of contacts themselves
to find players in high schools, colleges, and the international game not to mention the current free-agent market. Management
would be wise to spend money throughout the hockey operations department to uncover hidden talents through a broad network
of good scouts. A solid understanding of the salary cap is obviously a high priority for any GM.
These components
will allow him to build a team with a strong bench by finding those players that other scouting staffs have overlooked. Then
when injuries hit, as they inevitably do with every team, the hopes of a winning season wont go to the bench in street clothes.
